#CES2018: Consumers Want Experiences with their Technology


The Story

#CES2018 has come to a close and what a week it was! With over 180,000 people, 4,500 vendors, and cutting-edge technology all around, a colleague and I walked over 50,000 steps in 3.2 million square feet of exhibits. Although we didn’t encounter any breakthrough technologies this year, we enjoyed looking for trends and discovering ways to harness current technologies for new user experiences. We also learned a lot about robots, drones, Google, and sleep.

BuddyRobots. Everywhere you turned, there seemed to be some kind of robot that promised to make your life simpler. Some had faces and personalities; others were focused on a specific function. How about Buddy? Buddy is your companion robot who connects, protects, and interacts with each member of your family. Or, if you’d prefer, you can get a robot that sings “Happy Birthday” or one that cries with you. My favorite robot had to be the FoldiMate that folds your laundry.

Drones. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a few minutes to watch the Intel Light Show over the Bellagio fountains. Each night, Intel used 250 shooting star drones to perform a choreographed routine that dazzled the spectators. It was truly an amazing experience. And, there were drones everywhere within the show, too. Though we had some fun flying the smaller drones through an obstacle course, we also learned where the industry is going in terms of utilizing drones for improved customer experience.

Google

Google. In 2017, CES seemed to be dominated by Alexa (Amazon), but this year it was all about Google Assistant. Google had a significant marketing investment at the show (including wrapping the monorail cars) and had major booths to show that they plan to be a major player in the virtual personal assistant space. I don’t know who is going to win this battle, but if it was anything like this year at CES, Google is on the way!

Sleep. From the technology-filled mattresses and bedrooms to mediation and biofeedback tools, it was the year of sleep aides. One of the most fascinating things we witnessed happened at the NuCalm exhibit where we saw a room filled with people relaxing in reclining chairs with headphones and eye masks while attendants walked around to check on everyone. The exhibit claimed that you would feel like you got two hours of sleep after spending just 20 minutes with them. It was like a scene out of a sci-fi movie where humans gather in sleeping rooms for technology-enhanced sleep instead of sleeping in private bedrooms.

I also have to mention the weirdest thing we encountered this year at #CES2018, which was the PsychASec booth. In this exhibit we were told of a chip that could be placed in the back of your neck to help keep all your memories in tack as you get older. The story was intriguing and frightening all at the same time.

The good news? It wasn’t real. It turns out this display was an elaborate marketing tool for the new Netflix series, Altered Carbon, in which human consciousness can be transferred from body to body. Though it was only a hoax, the exhibit was so well done that it took us a few minutes to figure out that it was just a TV show.

What I Learned And You Can Learn

As I tell everyone I work with, you must attend the CES show at some point in your life to experience something that is hard to put into words. For me, it’s about prospective. At CES, you get immersed into a world where possibilities are endless and the future is bright. It’s inspiring to see so many companies who are focused on making the world a better, more accessible place and who don’t let challenges stop their dreaming. As we continually say in the Nason Group, innovation and disruption is a mindset and a lifestyle. Nowhere is this more evident than CES.

Over the next few weeks, I look forward to diving into the hottest trends for 2018 including consumer trends and healthcare trends and helping you connect with what’s next in bridging technology with customer experiences.

What I Did And What You Can Do

This is simple. I am going to keep saying YES! in 2018.

Recently, I was asked about the Top Innovations To Expect in 2018. Here is my response:

“This is the year of the consumer, patient, or member. If your organization is not focusing on the human part of your interaction, you are going to be left behind. Yes, technology is important and should be an extension to your product of service, but not the only thing you think about.”

Though technology can be a significant piece of the innovation process, technology is only effective when paired with the voice and needs of the consumer.

So in 2018: Yes, to innovation! Yes, to technology! Yes, to the consumer! YES! YES! YES!

The POWER OF YES! in Claiming What You Believe


The Story

2017 was an amazing year both professionally and personally. I celebrated 20 years with my Carlaamazing wife who, if it were not for, I would be completely crazy. (Thank you, Carla, for who you are to me and for everything you do for me.) As a parenting team, we saw lots of firsts for both of our children and got to enjoy some special times together. In September, I joined North Star Receivers and met a fantastic group of guys who have changed my life for the better. I also published a book called The Power of Yes! in Innovation! If you know me, you’ll know this is a true miracle within itself. (Thank you, Steve, for all of your hard work in pushing me to get this project over the finish line.) The Nason Group experienced tremendous growth and impact, including team members coming and going.

What I Learned And What You Can Learn

Throughout all of the events of 2017, I had a little voice in my head saying, “Shawn, what do you really believe?” That voice kept BELIEVE-IN-YOURSELF-ALWAYS--1challenging me to be a better person for my wife, kids, friends, and business partners. To respond to this nagging voice, I gathered the Nason Group team towards the end of the year and asked, “What exactly do we believe?” Something magical happened next. We hacked away at the question and, many iterations later, we have a set of We Believe statements that will help us move into the future together. We even brought in our partners to help us frame the statements so that the statements speak to the essence of who we are as the Nason Group. So, here they are:

We Believe . . .

  • The best thought solutions don’t always have to be complicated.
  • Using know me, surprise me, and make it easy will reconstruct the customer experience.
  • Disruption is healthy and necessary for growth and leads to new ideas that change the world (your world).
  • Ideas that are radical enough to change lives require a space for teams to create, develop, test, and implement.
  • Engaging consumers’ stories and voices are mission critical when exploring new ideas and the ONLY way to do business well.
  • Figuring out the right questions to ask takes time and energy.
  • With the POWER OF YES! anything is possible.

Working as a team to create these statements led me to a deeper understanding of the difference between doing and being. For too long, I’ve been caught up in the doing without spending enough time working on a foundation of being. Maybe you’ve been in the same boat?

What I Did And What You Can Do

In December, I spent a retreat weekend with my group from the North Star Receivers. Throughout the weekend, we examined at our lives and challenged each other to engage some hard questions, which led to even more clarity about my beliefs. My challenge for you this week is to do the same. Take some time to claim what you BELIEVE through these questions:

  • What conversations do I need to have?
  • What relationships do I need to address, let go of, or heal?
  • What activities do need to stop doing?
  • What activities do I need to start doing?
  • What am I going to do about “me” time?
  • What support do I need and what support am I open to receiving?
  • What is my mantra and brand that I want to live out?
  • What’s the impact I want to have in the world?

LuLaRoe: Will You Make It Right?


The Story…

Imagine with me, you are sitting at your desk, maybe at your dining room table, possibly even on your couch. The day has come! The biggest product launch in the company’s history. You are logged in, chatting with other team members. Your nerves are building up! The time comes and you get your lottery number. Not the best number, but you have one. You will spend the next hour waiting and wondering what product will still be available and to your surprise, NONE! This happened to my wife yesterday and many of her friends as LuLaRoe was launching the new NOIR collection (all black)! Many of these consultants had done pre-sales, had planned big launches, and nothing left! Zero! Zilch! Zip! 

I will do my best to present facts and truth in this next section. Here is what I have learned:

  • There are over 80,000+ consultants and somewhere around number 3,000, all stock was gone.
  • There were no limits put on orders, so the bigger consultant shops bought thousands of pieces, while the little shops got nothing.
  • At this point, LuLaRoe has not sent any communication out to their consultants.

So, this means that only about 3% of consultants were allowed to order anything. Some of the bigger consultants placed orders that were over $100,000 dollars.

What We Learned And What You Can Learn…

There are several things we have learned in this process. What I am going to share is the positive, because I refuse to give LuLaRoe anymore brain power on this.

  1. We have amazing friends, customers, and partners in this business. We have all pulled together and we will be fine!
  2. As a small business owner myself, many of these consultants are small business owners. Support small businesses whenever you can!!!
  3. No matter what you do, stay true to what you stand for. Don’t waiver. Don’t be swayed. And, never allow money to be the driving factor.
  4. If you are going to have a mission statement like the one below, be ready to make it right at all times, no matter the cost.

What We Will Do And What You Can Do…

I am always about taking the high road and giving people second chances. So we will do that; we will give LuLaRoe the chance to make it right. If you are a consumer, send messages via social media.  Let the company know how disappointed you are in this situation. If LuLaRoe is who they say they are, they will make it right.

Find Your Purpose Today! The Narrative Of Self-Care Being Selfish Is Over!


The Story…

Imagine with me, you enter a restaurant for the first time in a city you have never been. You come from behind the fire place and there are nine men sitting at a table; the table you are getting ready to sit at yourself. You sit down and introduce yourself to each of them. All are very personable and you have great conversation throughout the meal; but there is that time when you all look at each other thinking, “Who is that man? What does he do? Where is he from? Why is he here?”  

All of these guys are from different walks of life.

A Realtor.

A Restauranteur.

A Life Coach.

A Bio-Hacker.

A Wine Maker… just to name a few.

They are all entrepreneurs. Passionate about life. Passionate about family. Passionate about learning from each other. Each one of them are on a journey. All in different spots, but a journey to be a better person! 

Well, that experience is real. It is real to me! I had the honor to travel to Vancouver and stay on Bowen Island for the weekend.  I was introduced to these incredible men through an organization called ManTalks. Connor Beaton is the founder and the one I hold responsible for wrecking my life (in a good way). We spent the whole weekend digging deep into who we are called to be as men, husbands, partners, friends, and most of all; how to be true to ourselves. I had the opportunity to connect in honesty, integrity, transparency, and loyalty, in a way that I had never done before. What’s amazing is this; they are all now brothers in my life, and I get to spend the next year on an amazing journey with them.

Over the weekend, we focused a great deal of time on PURPOSE. What does purpose mean? It’s simple…

I think all of us have thought about this at one time or another, and many of us have struggled through it; possibly even lying to ourselves on why we exist or why we were created.

What I Learned And What You Can Learn…

Where do I begin? I learned that it is OK to focus on me. To focus on what I want as a man, as a husband, as a father, as a friend. I learned that for me to be my best in each of those roles, I need to take care of my emotional, physical, and mental well-being.

One of the exercises we did through the weekend was to create a purpose documentI am still working on my SFD (those of you who have worked with me, know what this means.) It is coming along and will be a work in progress. What it HAS done is allowed me to bring focus in the right areas in my life.

There are two things I believe that you can learn from my journey. First, stay true to yourself. Be the best you and then you can be the best for all of those around you. Second, take time to breathe. Breathe in all around you. We learned a wonderful new breathing technique. If you are interested you can go here: Wim Hof Method.

What I Will Do And What You Can Do…

I have taken time already on this journey to write out goals and objectives that will allow me to live out my purpose statement. In these goals and objectives, I will focus on things that will make me better in each area of purpose. It may not always be easy, but it is what is right.

What can you do? You can take time to slow down. Write your purpose statement. Focus on the best you and begin to live it out. Take 30 minutes today to do that.

VIDEO BLOG: “Run Forrest Run!” – Running Ahead Of Your Bullies


What I Was Doing…

We all remember the scene in the movie, Forrest Gump, where Jenny and Forrest were walking down the dirt road and three bullies began throwing rocks at Forrest. At first, Forrest did not know what to do. Then Jenny looked at him and said, “Run Forrest Run!”

When Forrest began to run, it was not pretty. As a matter of fact, it was downright pitiful. He was running down that dirt road in braces with nowhere to go. But he did not give up. He kept running as fast as he could to get away from the bullies. Before you know it, the braces started to break and fall off – much like shackles being removed from a prisoner. FORREST WAS FREE! 

He could not only run, but he could run fast – and he outran the bullies – becoming stronger in the process!

What I Learned…

The moral of that scene is much like many of our experiences in the world of innovation. We find ourselves faced with bullies – sometimes from the outside – but many times from within our walls. People are often afraid of the unknown. They fear that they might mess-up or worse, they might fail.

Recently I was asked about running ahead – and if there were anything I would do differently in my approach to innovation within the two industries – healthcare and higher education – that need INNOVATION. Here is my response:

What I Will Do

As a man, father, husband, and leader, I have made a conscious and challenging choice – to let people run!  As I was preparing for this week’s blog post, I came across a page on LifeHack.org entitled, Run, Forest, Run! 16 Life Lessons We Can Learn From Forrest Gump. As I read through it, I found that many of the points highlighted need to be part of our innovation toolkit. Here are the six I believe are key:

  • Don’t Be Afraid To Be Honest – If we are willing to be honest, we may be able to come to the right sooner than later.
  • Don’t Be Afraid To Lose (Fail) – Fail Fast, Fail Forward! Just Do It!
  • Always Try New Things. You Might Be Great At Them – If we do not try new things, everything will always be the same. That is not Innovation!
  • Sometimes, You Just Have To Do The Right Thing – Even When Everyone Tells You Not To – Remember, we all are humans. We all are consumers. Do what is right!
  • You Never Know Who’s Lives You’ll Change – Exactly!
  • Do What You Love – Why would you do anything else?

What You Can Do…

It is all about RUNNING! It is all about taking ACTION! We as innovators know what needs to be done, but what matters the most is that we – RUN!

I encourage you to take 30 minutes this week and do something that you have been afraid to do. Go have fun! Go learn something new! Break free!

What I Learned…

The past five years have been an incredible journey and roller coaster. As I look back on them, I realized I would not change a thing. If it were not for the good, the bad, and the ugly, I would not be who I am today as a leader or as a person. I have followed my passion and my dreams – and WOW, it is empowering!

What I Will Do…

On this journey, I have learned one thing about me as a person. I have the ability to connect and build relationships and see things in leaders that they may not see in themselves. My mission now as a leader is to equip others with the courage, passion, and resilience to do this thing call INNOVATION!

What Can You Do…

So, what can you do? Take 15 minutes today and think of the one person you can encourage in life or help find their passion. Call them, text them, or write to them!

“No, We Can’t Do It!” – The POWER OF YES In Innovation!


What I Was Doing…

“No, we can’t do it!”  This is the most common phrase I have heard in my years as a leader in innovation. From big organizations to small ones, from the government to educationresilient-quote. It seems that it is easier for people to say, no, instead of YES!

This week I began working with a new client that comes from a very strict and regulated organization. The team is faced with more opposers than supporters at times. Their mission is powerful to help change the lives of those they serve and make them better. You would think it would be easy to innovate, but it’s not for this team.

What I appreciated during my time with them was their passion to keep moving forward, their passion to make a difference and not let the organization take them down. I would love to say in my own personal walk that I always had that attitude, but I did not. I allowed at times for the organization to overpower my passion. To distract me from the greater good of what I was called to do. NEVER AGAIN!

What I Learned…

The team this week taught me again what it means to have RESILIENCE. Resilience is the ability to become strong, healthy, or succeresiliencessful again after something bad happens. In my world, many times that is focused on failure or the failure of a new idea, solution, product, or service.

As I look back on my experiences, there have been times where resilience was the only thing that got me through what I was doing. I had to have a mindset that nothing would distract me from the purpose or mission in front of me. I am not going to lie; innovation is not for the faint of heart. It is for the person who is willing to take the biggest challenges, opportunities, or frontiers not yet explored and go after it.

What I Will Do…

This week as I was traveling I viewed an infographic published by The Center For Creative Leadership  entitled, 8 Steps To Become More Resilient. Here it is:

As I read through the infographic, I realized it really did come back to simply saying, YES!

Yes, I will accept change!

Yes, I will learn!

Yes, I will take charge of my destiny!

Yes, I will find my sense of purpose!

Yes, I will be me!

Yes, I will have relationships!

Yes, I will reflect!

Yes, I will shift!

Yes, I will shift!

This is truly the essence of the POWER OF YES IN INNOVATION! You have to say, Yes to yourselves some mornings when you get up, or when you walk into that meeting where you know you are gong to face opposition. You have to have RESILIENCE!

So, over the next week, I am going to focus on these eight steps to becoming more resilient. I will encourage all those that I come into contact with to do the same. Say, YES first, then take action!

What Can You Do…

So, what can you do? I am going to ask that you take 30 minutes and identify one area where you are facing opposition or challenges – whether it is at work, at home, or anywhere you are a leading a project. Look at each of the eight steps above and identify how you can say YES in that situation! It may simply be to accept the change. Or, maybe you will need to work on building a positive relationship. After, you spend these 30 minutes, GO DO IT!

The POWER OF YES In 2017!


What I Was Doing:  My Story…

Over a year ago I wrote a blog post titled, The Power of Yes In Innovation. I wrote these words:

Each day I try to live the POWER OF YES–the power to give people the freedom to explore, test, and win, the power to let my children be all they want to be, the power to allow innovators the freedom to create what has never been created before, and most importantly, the power to say yes to life.

At that time, I had no idea the profound impact these words would have on me as a leader, executive, friend, husband, father, or overall person. Those words became more and more important to me every day as I walked through 2016.

I’ll share a brief story about the POWER OF YES in my own life. I had the privilege to be a part of a new organization this year as the Chief Transformation Officer. When the opportunity was presented to me, I could have said no. I knew the role would be hard and a challenge for me, but I also knew I could not run from it. So, I said YES – and in doing so, learned so much about my capabilities as a person, and as important, my capabilities as a leader!

What I Learned…

First, I learned that as a C-Suite Executive, my word and actions could empower a culture to change. I did not need to be the decision maker. I did not need to know everything. I did not have to be at every meeting. All I had to do is say the word, YES!

Yes! You Can Take That Risk!

Yes! You Are Able To Do It!

Second, as a leader, I learned that I had the ability to see talents and skills within associates that they may not see or they may not have had the opportunity to share.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Never allow a person to tell you no who doesn’t have the power to tell you yes.”

Simple! But yet, so hard for so many leaders. As a leader, we have the power to say no – but being able to say yes opens the door for engaging collaboration, opportunities for growth and the realizing of untapped potential.

Now, saying yes has it risks – but you cannot empower your organization, your team, and your associates unless you are willing to take the first step. By doing so, you will equip your teams with their own courage to say, YES!

Lastly, I learned that saying Yes doesn’t always mean that I am right or that it is going to go the way I want it to go.  I have to provide my team members the ability to fail or take risks that I may not take myself.  This means I must empower and support my teams to make decisions that may not necessarily be the ones I would make. As I worked with my teams over the past year, I did my best to get out of the way and provide the freedom for them to be their best. By doing so, I was able to help them to be better leaders and stronger team members.

What I Will Do With It…

For 2017, I am determined to live by the POWER OF YES! How? By following these three simple steps:

Y – Yes, I can! Yes, you can! Yes, we can! Yes, Yes, Yes! In all circumstances, opportunities or challenges, I will do my best to say Yes first!

Equip and Empower all those around me to not only reach for their dreams but for the things they may feel are unattainable.

S – Succeed! There is a measure of success within each and every opportunity. Even if I fail, I learn and I move forward.

In 2017 I will be fulfilling a dream of my own to write a book. Be on the lookout for it! Also, I will be launching a website on the POWER OF YES!

As 2016 comes to a close and we all begin to look forward to the New Year – my challenge to you is simply this: Live by the POWER OF YES in 2017!

2016 Reflections From The Heart!


2016 has been an extraordinary year for me – both professionally and personally. From reconnecting with old friends to stepping into one of the most rewarding experiences in my career – I have made new friends, been challenged by old ones, and found myself inspired by the world around me.

I Learned!

I Rejoiced!

I Gave!

I would like to share five reflections with you as we close this year out:

  1. It’s Not About Me! It’s about those around us. Jack Welch reminded all of us of this in his quote, The day you become a leader, your job is to take people who are already great and make them unbelievable.”
  2. Design Leads Strategy. This is not always easy, but it is right.
  3. Simplify, Simplify, Simplify. Steve Jobs stated, “Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
  4. Conquer Your Fears! You can do anything you put your mind to – even if you do not believe you can! As a leader, father, husband, friend, or just as a person, I have to remember these three things: be honest with myself, make the behavior my own, and take the plunge.
  5. Know Me! Surprise Me! Make It Easy! In the spirit of simplicity, quit making everything so difficult for consumers. Live by these three principles, and you can hit it out of the park.

The last thing I want to leave you with as we close 2016 is simply this – the power of yes! Richard Branson stated,“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you are not sure you can do it, say yes. Then learn how to do it later.” Next week I will share on the POWER OF YES IN 2017!!!

Silos: The Trees Are Your Solution!!!


Last week I shared what I believe to be three key principles a leader needs to embrace when setting forth to break down organizational silos. I would like to take this week and dig a bit deeper into this subject.

For many leaders, while they understand their organization is siloed and this is stagnating their growth, finding direction can often feel like one is deep in the forest – unable to see through the trees. But herein lies the magic – the trees are often where the solutions stand. You already know “your trees” – those key stakeholders within your organization who will champion, disrupt and cultivate dynamic open collaboration and empowered decision making necessary for culture shifts and sustained organizational growth across all business units.  Many trees – one forest. Many voices – endless potential!

 Over 25 years ago Jack Welch championed what was then a groundbreaking concept – working across organizational boundaries and disrupting operational “norms”.  Welch felt that by designing shorter decision cycles, increasing employee engagement and building a strong network of collaboration, companies could experience greater success. His theory became the GE Work-Out process and it centered around creating a “boundary-less organization.”

 His idea was – and remains – genius.  Provide the organization with a forum in which to collaborate and problem solve –  bringing key stakeholders together to share their skills, expertise, experiences, and insights. Use your internal talent. Innovate, inspire and collaborate: all in real time with the people are invested in the success of an organization!

 Decades later far too many organization still struggle from within their legacy driven organizational structures. As Ron Ashkenas wrote in his 2015 Harvard Business Review Article Still Works:

 Fast forward to today, and we live in a different world. Our communications technologies have dramatically improved. Welch’s “boundary-less organization” should seemingly be the de facto reality for most companies. To the contrary, however, many organizations still have hierarchical, siloed, and fragmented processes and cultures. Recently read the book Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett & Dave Evans. Bill & Dave lay-out five mindsets for us as individuals to use, but they are also key for organizations in helping break-down silos:

  1. Curiosity – Be Curious
  2. Bias To Action – Try Stuff
  3. Reframing – Reframe Problems
  4. Awareness – Know It’s A Process
  5. Radical Collaboration – Ask For Help

Here is what Bill says about Radical Collaboration:

This is perhaps the most important design thinking mindset in Life Design. The best designers know that great design requires radical collaboration. You are not (and should not be) alone. An artist can create a masterpiece holed-up in a cabin in the woods but a designer cannot create the next global, behavior changing piece of hardware solo. Your life is more like a great design than a piece of art. It is a collaborative process. Many of the best ideas will come from other people, you just need to ask. Essentially, Life Design, like all design, is a team sport.

Silos have no place in our lives, let alone as an operational foundation of any business or corporation!

The sooner you build your Life Design team, the better. Engage the people you love and admire to work together to design a better lives individually – and as a community.
